July is Transition Month: Supporting Children Through Change
As schools across the UK prepare to break for the summer holidays, July becomes an important time for transition. Whether children are moving into a new year group, starting primary school, or preparing for secondary school, these changes can bring a mixture of excitement, uncertainty and worry.
While transitions are a normal part of growing up, they can have a significant impact on a child’s wellbeing. Some children may adapt quickly, while others may need extra reassurance, time and support to feel confident about what’s ahead.
At Breathe Education, we recognise that successful transitions are about much more than meeting a new teacher or visiting a new classroom. They are about helping children feel safe, connected and ready to embrace change.
What might children be feeling?
It’s common for children to experience a range of emotions during transition. They may worry about making new friends, coping with different routines, or fitting into a new environment. Some children may become quieter, appear withdrawn, or lose interest in activities they previously enjoyed.
By recognising these feelings early, adults can provide reassurance and create opportunities for children to talk openly about their concerns.
How schools and families can help
Small, consistent actions can make a big difference during transition. Schools and parents can support children by:
- Encouraging open conversations about any worries or questions.
- Visiting new classrooms or schools where possible.
- Maintaining familiar routines over the summer.
- Reading stories or using social stories about starting a new class or school.
- Focusing on excitement and new opportunities while acknowledging that it’s okay to feel nervous.
For children with additional needs, including autistic pupils, personalised transition plans, visual supports and extra visits can help reduce anxiety and build confidence.
Building confidence for September
A positive transition isn’t about removing every worry—it’s about helping children develop the confidence and resilience to manage change. When children feel listened to, supported and understood, they’re more likely to begin the new school year feeling secure and ready to learn.
Breathe offers a wide range of evidence-informed guidance, classroom resources and practical toolkits to help schools, teachers and families support children’s wellbeing throughout periods of transition.
