Deaf Awareness Week UK 2026 takes place from 4–10 May and is an annual campaign dedicated to raising awareness of the Deaf community, their language, culture, and the challenges they face in everyday life. This year’s theme, “Right to understand – Together, we break barriers,” highlights the importance of accessible communication and equal participation for people who are deaf or have hearing loss.
The week encourages individuals, schools, and organisations to learn about British Sign Language (BSL), improve communication practices, and challenge barriers such as lack of captions, interpreters, and inclusive services. Ultimately, Deaf Awareness Week is about promoting inclusion, celebrating Deaf identity, and ensuring that everyone has the right to understand and be understood in society.
