Carers Week 2025: Championing Equality for Unpaid Carers Across the UK
From 9th to 15th June 2025, the UK will observe Carers Week, an annual campaign dedicated to recognising and supporting the nation’s unpaid carers. This year’s theme, “Caring About Equality,” shines a spotlight on the disparities faced by carers and calls for systemic change to ensure they receive the recognition and support they deserve.
Understanding Carers Week
Carers Week is a collaborative initiative led by Carers UK, in partnership with charities such as Age UK, Carers Trust, and Rethink Mental Illness. The campaign aims to:
-
Raise awareness of the challenges unpaid carers face
-
Recognise the vital contribution carers make to families and communities
-
Encourage individuals who may not identify as carers to seek support
In 2025, the focus is on “Caring About Equality,” highlighting issues such as increased risk of poverty, social isolation, and health disparities among carers. Helen Walker, Chief Executive of Carers UK, emphasised the importance of this theme, stating that unpaid carers often lack adequate support and recognition, leading to significant inequalities in their lives.
Daily Themes and Events
Throughout Carers Week 2025, each day will spotlight a specific aspect of carers’ experiences:
-
Monday: Health and Social Care
-
Tuesday: Financial Wellbeing
-
Wednesday: Work and Employment
-
Thursday: Younger Carers
-
Friday: Older Carers
-
Saturday: Mental Health and Wellbeing
-
Sunday: Reflections on Carers Week
Events will include webinars, workshops, and community gatherings aimed at providing resources and support to carers. For instance, NHS England is hosting a webinar focused on younger carers, addressing their unique challenges and needs.
Policy Developments and Support
In a significant policy shift, the UK government announced an increase in the Carer’s Allowance earnings limit from £151 to at least £181 per week, effective April 2025. This change allows carers to earn more without losing their allowance, benefiting approximately 60,000 carers. Consumer advocate Martin Lewis praised this move, highlighting its potential to alleviate financial pressures on carers.
How to Get Involved
Carers Week encourages everyone to participate and support carers in their communities. Here are some ways to get involved:
-
Attend Events: Join local or online events to learn more about carers’ experiences and needs.
-
Raise Awareness: Use social media platforms to share information and stories about carers, using the hashtag #CarersWeek2025.
-
Support Carers: Reach out to carers you know, offering assistance or simply acknowledging their efforts.
-
Advocate for Change: Engage with policymakers to push for policies that support carers’ rights and wellbeing.
Carers Week 2025 serves as a crucial reminder of the invaluable role unpaid carers play in our society. By focusing on equality, this year’s campaign aims to ensure that carers receive the recognition, support, and opportunities they rightfully deserve.
